Esther has been through quite the journey. In these last chapters she has experienced a new way of shock therapy that indeed helped her this time. She could get out of the bell jar and overcome her negative overthinking habits. She lost her virginity in a “strategic” way that helped her feel comfortable, yet she did not feel much difference after experiencing that, other than having a profuse hemorrhage. In chapter eighteen she states “I was my own woman”. This makes me believe Esther has accepted herself not only as a person but also she has accepted all that she has experienced so far. She has healed.
However, she is aware her mental issues could be back at some point. The book has an open ending but it leads me to believe she got discharged from the mental facility and went back to try to live her life in her own terms with confidence and wisdom.
"The bell jar hung, suspended, a few feet above my head. I was open to the circulating air".
